Roshni and Rohan’s Eco-Friendly Destination Wedding in Chikmagalur
When Sara (Roshni’s mother) shared her story with me, I instantly knew that I wanted to be a part of this wedding. Sara is a person who lives life on her own terms. I admired her honesty, her straightforwardness and what she was trying to do for her daughter’s wedding. This was planned as a Destination Wedding in an estate in Mudigere near Chikmagalur, Karnataka. Both the families would come down to this venue to be a part of the celebrations.
Here is Sara’s story, as to why having this eco-friendly wedding was so important to her and her family:
“We are an animal loving and environment sensitive family. The bride is passionate about saving animals, environment and fiercely fights against wastage of any natural resources. We were very clear the wedding will have to be within these guidelines – natural environs, usage of recycled and reusable products, least wastage and returning goodness to mother earth.
To start with “save the date” invites went with our most adorable pets Fran and Mia inviting our friends and family along with bride and groom.
It was hard to find a Location that would fit into our guidelines anywhere in and around Bangalore and after a frustrating search, it struck us that we should take it back to our estate in outskirts of Mudigere. That was the best thought and we worked full time to get the place ready from scratch.
For a starter, the house was built using local materials mud and wood completely handmade literally including bricks and tiles. 40 artisans and potters from Shantinekatan worked overtime to set the place up. Equipped with solar power and heaters we were ready to go. Entire look and feel was rustic and the theme clearly was recycle, reuse and reduce waste. Be it recycled bottles used to add a dash of colour to the all green feel, wedding cards and decor was made up of gunny bags, the bride wore her mom’s clothes & jewellery remodelled, bamboo and banana leaf mantap and many such elements. Every guest had a choice to sow seeds of either a fruit or vegetable of their choice.
We tossed with an idea to put out a crowd funding for animal welfare as an option for those who wish to contribute instead of wedding gifts but that seemed like we assumed they would give us a gift. We decided to contribute ourselves to animal aid foundation as against wasting it on lavish poojas and rituals.
